Lt Gen Asim Malik Appointed as New ISI Chief

In a significant reshuffle within Pakistan’s military leadership, Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He will succeed Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, taking charge on September 30, 2024. This appointment was officially announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on September 23, 2024.

Lt Gen Malik, currently serving as the Adjutant General at General Headquarters (GHQ), brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has held prominent positions, including commanding the Infantry Division in Balochistan and the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. His notable academic credentials include graduation from prestigious institutions like Fort Leavenworth, USA, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.

Lt Gen Malik’s military career is distinguished by his achievements, such as receiving the coveted Sword of Honor during his training. He has also served as the Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta. His appointment comes at a crucial time, given the evolving regional security landscape and Pakistan’s internal challenges.

Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, his predecessor, served in the role since 2021, having led Corps V in Karachi and overseen operations in Balochistan and Kurram Agency.
